Fluoride Treatments for Kids
Topical fluoride treatments help protect your child’s teeth from cavities between visits by strengthening the enamel. At Unicorn Dental Group, we tailor the application method to your child’s age and comfort.
Request an AppointmentFor younger children, a fluoride varnish is gently brushed onto the teeth. This varnish hardens on contact with saliva, forming a protective layer that’s simply brushed away later that evening, no fuss involved.
Fluoride for Older Children
For older children, fluoride is usually applied with a foam tray that sits in the mouth for a short period, and a suction straw removes any excess foam and saliva along the way. After treatment, your child should avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes to give the fluoride time to fully take effect.
Why Fluoride Matters
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps reverse the earliest stages of decay before a cavity even forms. Paired with regular cleanings and exams, fluoride treatments are one of the simplest, most effective tools we have for keeping young smiles cavity-free.

How often does my child need a fluoride treatment?
Fluoride treatments are typically applied at routine cleanings, usually twice a year, though your dentist may recommend more frequent applications for higher-risk children.
Is fluoride safe for young children?
Yes, fluoride treatments are safe and widely recommended by pediatric dental professionals when applied properly by a trained team.
What should my child avoid after a fluoride treatment?
Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after treatment to allow the fluoride to fully absorb into the enamel.
Can fluoride reverse a cavity that’s already started?
Fluoride can help reverse the very earliest stages of decay before a cavity fully forms, but it can’t repair an existing cavity.
What’s the difference between varnish and foam tray fluoride?
Varnish is brushed on and hardens quickly, making it ideal for younger children, while foam trays are typically used for older children who can comfortably hold the tray in place.
